Finding Details:
The member was found to have committed professional misconduct in that in June 2018 she:
- physically and emotionally abused a client and contravened the standards of practice of the profession by failing to take appropriate action with respect to her nursing colleagues’ application of restraints to a patient;
- failed to keep records as required; contravened the standards of practice of the profession; and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct when she inadequately documented the care and treatment she provided to the patient, including but not limited to: failing to document the application of restraints to the patient; failing to appropriately document her observation and monitoring of the patient following the application of restraints; failing to appropriately document the ongoing need for restraints on the patient; and failing to appropriately document information about the patient’s death;
- contravened the standards of practice of the profession and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct when she provided inappropriate and inadequate care and treatment to the patient, including but not limited to: failing to appropriately assess the ongoing need for restraints on the patient; failing to initiate appropriate interventions after finding the patient appearing to be deceased; transporting the patient to their bed and failing to notify a manager after determining they were deceased; and in June and July 2018 by providing inaccurate information to the facility in its investigation of the patient’s death and agreeing with a colleague to provide inaccurate information to the Facility in its investigation of the patient’s death; and
- engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable, and unprofessional conduct when she provided inadequate care and treatment to the patient, including but not limited to: observing and permitting her nursing colleagues to apply restraints to the patient without assessing the appropriateness and need for restraints and alternatives to the application of restraints; observing her colleagues apply restraints to the patient without obtaining an order for the application of restraints and failing to implement a medical directive for the application of restraints.
