Finding Details:
The member was found to have committed professional misconduct in December 2016 in that she:
- contravened the standards of practice of the profession, failed to keep records as required and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct when she failed to adequately document the application of a restraint to a patient; and
- contravened the standards of practice of the profession and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct when she failed to assess and reassess the patient’s need for restraint and consider available alternatives to restraints; restrained the patient when it was not necessary to do so or used a restraint that was not the least restraint required; used an improper device to restrain the patient; failed to obtain a physician’s order for the application of a restraint; failed to obtain consent of the patient or their substitute decision-maker regarding the application of a restraint; failed to notify the patient or their substitute decision-maker of the reason for the application of a restraint; and failed to monitor the patient at appropriate intervals when the patient was restrained.

Outcome Details:
The Discipline Committee ordered that the member’s certificate of registration be suspended for two months, commencing August 10, 2020; required the member to appear before the panel to be reprimanded; and imposed the following terms, conditions and limitations on the member’s certificate of registration:
- Must successfully complete specified remedial activities
- Must inform employer(s) of results of discipline hearing
- Must inform College of all nursing employer(s) for a period of time
