Finding Details:
The member was found to have committed professional misconduct in that the member:
-
misappropriated property from a client or workplace; contravened the standards of practice of the profession; and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct in or about August 2017, by misappropriating Toradol prescribed to a family member of a patient; and in or about June 2017 to February 2018, by misappropriating liquid Morphine prescribed to a patient and/or failing to safely store this medication and protect the personal health information of the patient on the medication label;
-
contravened a term, condition or limitation on the member’s certificate of registration and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct from February to March 2017 by practising nursing when the member’s certificate of registration was suspended;
-
contravened a provision of the Nursing Act, 1991, the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 or the regulations under either of those Acts and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct from February to March 2017 by using the title registered practical nurse and/or nurse, or a variation thereof, and by holding out as a person who is qualified to practice nursing in Ontario when the member’s certificate of registration was suspended; and

contravened the standards of practice of the profession and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct in or about December 2016 to April 2017, by failing to maintain the boundaries of the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship with a patient and a family member of the patient, including but not limited to, making disclosures to the patient and/or the patient’s family member about the member’s personal life without a professional or clinical purpose, accepting and cashing a cheque for $15,000 from the patient’s family member, accepting a gift of a dog bed from the patient’s family member, residing in the patient’s family member’s home, naming the patient’s family member as the member’s emergency contact when seeking medical care; and by making statements about the member’s personal life to the patient’s family member that were untrue; in or about June 2017 to November 2020, by failing to maintain the boundaries of the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship with another patient and the family members of this patient, including but not limited to, making disclosures to the family members about the member’s personal life, without a professional or clinical purpose, naming the patient’s family member as the member’s emergency contact when seeking medical care in November 2017, moving into the patient’s family member’s home while providing care to the patient and/or continuing to live in the residence after the patient’s death, and/or identifying the member as a member of the patient’s family, including calling the patient’s family members the member’s parents, assuming the patient’s first name as the member’s middle name, and using the patient’s family’s last name as the member’s own.

The Discipline Committee ordered that the member’s certificate of registration be revoked immediately; required the member to appear before the panel to be reprimanded; and directed the member to pay of fine of $15,000 to the Minister of Finance.
