Finding Details:
The member was found to have committed professional misconduct in that he:
- contravened the standards of practice of the profession; failed to keep records as required; and engaged in dishonourable and unprofessional conduct in October 2018 by documenting that a patient who was blind, weak, and had suffered falls, was “within defined limits” when they were not; and
- contravened the standards of practice of the profession and engaged in dishonourable and unprofessional conduct in October 2018 by attempting to administer medications to a patient by pouring them down the patient’s throat with juice, without explanation, despite a language barrier, the patient being blind, and contrary to direction given to the member by his preceptor, and by pushing the patient forward and banging on their back without warning when the patient choked on the juice and medications, causing the patient to become agitated and incontinent of urine; and by attempting to administer crushed medication via a syringe to a second patient, who had a decreased level of consciousness, contrary to the direction given to the member by his preceptor; and in November 2018, by making inappropriate comments regarding other nursing staff at a meeting with management stating that he knew women, that gossiping was “a woman thing" and that such gossip should not affect the staff's opinion of his work, or words to that effect; by expressing his anger following his meeting with management to one of his co-workers that other nurses should not be criticizing his work, that he did not need to be “babysat”, and that he did not need to take direction from “these girls”, or words to that effect; by failing to properly waste a vial of midazolam after some of the medication had been administered to a patient; and by speaking angrily and/or in an agitated manner to the pharmacy technician when advised that the medication needed to be wasted properly or the pharmacy technician would have to do it and prepare an incident report.

The Discipline Committee ordered that the member’s certificate of registration be suspended for 4 months; required the member to appear before the panel to be reprimanded; directed that the member pay costs of $4,800.00; and imposed the following terms, conditions and limitations on the member’s certificate of registration:
- Must successfully complete specified remedial activities
- Must inform employer(s) of results of discipline hearing
- Must inform College of all nursing employer(s) for a period of time
