Finding Details:
The member was found to have committed professional misconduct between October 2017 and January 2018 in that she:
- contravened the standards of practice of the profession; failed to keep records as required; and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct by failing to adequately document admissions, assessments and nursing notes for any patients admitted to the facility and under her care at the facility; and
- contravened the standards of practice of the profession and engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional conduct by failing to assist her colleague with the assessment and care of a patient and providing assessment and care to the patient who was in medical distress; failing to respond promptly to a radio call from her colleague; failing to secure the medication cart at the facility; failing to respond promptly on one or more occasions to a code situation where a patient of the facility was overdosing; watching videos and playing on her phone while on shift at the facility; failing to complete hourly checks on patients; failing to take steps to advise herself of the arrival and admission of a patient; failing to assess a patient when they arrived at the facility and at any time after their admission and failing to complete 15-minute checks on the patient and ensuring that a colleague had done so.
Outcome Details:
The Discipline Committee ordered that the member’s certificate of registration be suspended for seven months; required the member to appear before the panel to be reprimanded; and imposed the following terms, conditions and limitations on the member’s certificate of registration:
- Must successfully complete specified remedial activities
- Must inform employer(s) of results of discipline hearing
- Must inform College of all nursing employer(s) for a period of time
- Employer(s) to provide specified reports to College for a period of time
